Structure of the Serie A league

The top league in Italy is called Serie A, and it consists of 20 clubs. The season lasts from August to May, during which time each club plays every other team twice – once at home and once away – for a total of 38 matches.

Three Serie B clubs are promoted to take their position for the following season in lieu of the three teams with the worst final standings. If two or more teams earn the same amount of points, the order in which they appear in the Premier League standings is determined first by goal differential and then by total goals scored. The teams will be given the same place in the standings if they are still unable to be divided.

The new 2023-2024 season begins on 19th August with four matches. Among others, reigning scudetto winners SSC Napoli start away against promoted Frosinone Calcio at 18:30 GMT.

The Serie A clubs that will be playing in the new season of 2023–24 are Atalanta, Bologna, Fiorentina, Inter, Juventus, Lazio, Milan, Monza, Napoli, Roma, Salernitana, Lecce, Sassuolo, Empoli, Udinese, Torino, Genua, Cagliari, Verona and Forsinone.

Frosinone, Genua, and Cagliari are the three teams who have been promoted from Serie B to Serie A for the 2023/24 season.

The top four Serie A teams advance directly to the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. These Serie A teams, Napoli, Lazio, Inter and AC Milan did make it into the Champions League.

Italy Serie A History

Serie A was established for the 1929–30 season in its current format. The tournament was divided into regional groups from 1898 to 1922.

Since the 1923–24 season, Juventus has won the most championships with 36, followed by Inter Milan and AC Milan with 19 each. After the last turn of the championship, clubs began receiving physical trophies on the field starting in the 2004–05 season. Officially used from the 1960–61 campaign, the Coppa Campioni d’Italia trophy was kept by the winners teams at the Lega Nazionale Professionisti headquarters from 1961 until 2004.

Serie A and Serie B confirmed their separation in April 2009 coming off a dispute over broadcast rights, 19 of the 20 teams voted in favor of the change.

It is also important to note replay assistance was implemented in the 2017–18 season after they used video replays during a live trial session in April 2016.

Finally, in 2020, the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) did officially crowned Serie A as the finest national league in the world surpassing the Premier League. Having dominated with 10 titles from 1991 to 2006, it was the first occasion in 14 years that Serie A won this trophy.
