Ligue 1 teams
Some of the popular Ligue 1 teams that have played regularly in the top flight over the years include Paris St-Germain, Olympique Lyon, Olympique Marseille, Lille, St Etienne, Nantes, Nice, Lens, Girondins Bordeaux, and AS Monaco. These clubs enjoy considerable following beyond France and are quite popular across Africa.
Ligue 1 gets 4 slots in the UEFA Champions League competition. The top three teams qualify directly for the group stage of the Champions League while number four goes through the qualifying round. The team that finishes fifth in Ligue 1 gets to play in the UEFA Europa League. The slot for the newly introduced Europa Conference League goes to the sixth-placed team at the end of the season.
Ligue 1 teams have not enjoyed much success in the UEFA Champions League or even its old format the European Cup. Olympique Marseille won the inaugural Champions League format in 1992/93. This remains the only win by a French Club in Europe’s elite club competition. French teams have been runners-up in the European Cup/Champions League six times. Reims (1956, 1959), St Etienne (1976), Marseille (1991), Monaco (2004), PSG (2020).
French teams have not enjoyed any luck in the Europa League (formerly UEFA Cup) either. So far, there has been no winner from Ligue 1. Nevertheless, French teams have been runners-up five times – Bastia (1978), Bordeaux (1996), Marseille (1999, 2004, 2018).
History of Ligue 1
The French top professional league, known as the National back then, was first held in the 1932/33 season with a total of 20 teams participating. Some of the teams that participated and are still around today include Marseille, Metz, Nice, Nîmes, Rennes, Sochaux, and Montpellier. The inaugural winners in 1933 were Olympique Lillois, which later merged with SC Fives in 1944 to form Lille OSC.
The league’s name was changed from National to Division 1 starting in the 1933/34 season and the following year a proper promotion and relegation system was introduced. The league took a break during World War 2 and resumed after with 18 teams. The number of teams was increased to 20 during the 1965/66 season.
Ligue 1 format was officially launched in 2002 with 20 teams participating. The bottom 3 teams at the end of the season get relegated to Ligue 2 while 3 new ones are promoted. Marseille, Metz, Montpellier, Nice and Rennes remain the only founding clubs that are still playing in Ligue 1. Paris St Germain were promoted in 1974/75 and have remained in the top flight ever since.
